Alberta dining guide  has trendy cafes and authentic ethnic restaurants, but don't forget you're in cowboy country: At some point you should try the province's world-famous beef (barley-fed porterhouse steaks and filet mignon are particularly tasty) and chow down on a mound of flapjacks with maple syrup for breakfast. Game, from buffalo and caribou to wild boar and elk, is increasingly popular.
In recent years, restaurants in Alberta have experienced a surge in the number of seafood dishes on their menus— For international cuisine, both Edmonton and Calgary offer Asian, Middle Eastern and European restaurants.

The biggest revolution in Alberta's restaurant scene in recent years has been the advent of chefs who like to feature the province's bounty on their menus—look for local corn and other produce, berries, meat, poultry and cheese at many of Alberta's better dining establishments.

And don't forget Alberta's beers. The province's climate precludes growing grapes for wine, but there's plenty of top quality barley around, and the province is home to several excellent breweries and brew pubs. Big Rock Brewery is the province's largest craft brewer, with a variety of ales, wheat beers and seasonal beers.
From early June through early October, there are many farmers markets throughout the province that feature local produce, with an emphasis on organic and natural foods.

Both Calgary and Edmonton have banned smoking in all restaurants, pubs, casinos and bingo halls, although in nearby bedroom communities you won't find this restriction. However, the province's Tobacco Reduction Act has eradicated the sale of tobacco in places such as hospitals and post-secondary institutions, and limits how close people can smoke to building entrances.
